Tobias-Mayer Museum Marbach am Neckar
The Tobias Mayer Museum, which opened in 2018 and is housed in the natural scientist's birthplace in Marbach am Neckar and has been expanded to include a modern new building, presents topics based on Mayer's scientific research in the 18th century.
Tobias Mayer is regarded as one of the leading natural scientists of the Enlightenment. Born in Marbach am Neckar in 1723 and died as a professor in Göttingen in 1762, the self-taught scientist, who was only 39 years old, is best known for his precisely measured map of the moon and the prize he received posthumously from the British Board of Longitude for his solution to the longitude problem. His contributions to cartography, mathematics and astronomy are also well known.
Positioning and lunar cartography are still very topical today - e.g. through car guidance systems or the renewed interest in moon landings.
