The music and stories in this concerto cross the Atlantic in different eras and directions and bear witness to the mutual inspiration between the Old Continent and the New World.
Vivaldi composed the first of many operas about the Aztec ruler Moctezuma II (around 1465-1520). It depicts his last hours as a prisoner of Hernán Cortés, the Spanish conqueror of Mexico. Much music by the Italian composer Ignacio de Jerusalem y Stella (1710-1769) has been preserved in this country, as he worked at the capital's cathedral. The Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra is bringing one of his symphonies back to light from the archives. The music of J. S. Bach was a great inspiration for the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959), who worked as a cellist in theaters and cinemas in his youth. In his "Bachianas Brasileiras" Nos. 1 and 5 in particular, he impressively unfolds the possibilities of the cello.
A cooperation with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra.
