Easter Oratorio "Kommt, eilet und laufet, ihr flüchtigen Füße" BWV 249
Ascension Oratorio "Lobet Gott in seinen Reichen" BWV 11
After the moving St. Matthew Passion at the opening concert, we experience a radiant new beginning in Bach's Easter and Ascension Oratorios, which celebrate the hope of the resurrection with timpani and trumpets. Academy director Hans-Christoph Rademann and the JSB Ensemble interpret two more compact and lesser-known oratorios that also demonstrate Bach's great compositional artistry.
Several times in his life, Bach worked on his contrasting Easter Oratorio, for which he arranged a hunter's cantata from his own hand for the birthday of the Duke of Weißenfels in 1725. A later work is the Ascension Oratorio, which Bach composed shortly after his Christmas Oratorio. The large-scale alto aria " Ach, bleibe doch, mein liebstes Leben " forms its climax and served Bach as a parody model for the " Agnus Dei " of the Mass in B minor.
