Carl Friedrich Abel (1723 - 1787) was an outstanding composer and is regarded today as the last great soloist on the viola da gamba. His father worked as a viola da gamba player in the Köthen court orchestra under J. S. Bach. With Bach's letter of recommendation, the young Abel joined the Dresden court orchestra and many years later in London he was a close friend of Bach's son Johann Christian Bach.
Abel is said to have deeply moved audiences there with his wonderful viola da gamba music.
The French gambist and multiple prizewinner Lucile Boulanger, who performs with ensembles such as Les Talens Lyriques (Christophe Rousset) and Pygmalion (Raphaël Pichon), pays homage to the Bach and Abel dynasties. Unlike for violoncello, violin, lute or flute, Bach did not write any solo works for viola da gamba. Therefore, in her debut album " SOLO BACH-ABEL ", Boulanger interprets her own transcriptions alongside original works by Abel with her warm and enchanting tone.
