Italian splendor with a female figure The Vespers of Our Lady is probably Claudio Monteverdi's best-known sacred work.
Composed in 1610, three years after his opera L'Orfeo, he experimented with all facets of his compositional skills. He dedicated this magnificent music in praise of the Virgin Mary to Pope Paul V in his search for a new position in order to leave behind his unfavorable situation at the court of Mantua.
In various psalms, concerti and a concluding Magnificat, Monteverdi combines secular and sacred elements - from polyphonic motets and a cantus firmus to the new language of opera.
The vocal and instrumental virtuosity, the rich tonal colors and the stylistic diversity of the Marian Vespers fascinate performers and audiences alike. The Gaechinger Cantorey thus approaches the musical cosmos of this brilliant early baroque composer.
