Consolation and hope in Brahms' funeral music Brahms' Requiem is a powerful work with wonderful choruses, but no ordinary requiem mass.
Clara Schumann wrote to Brahms in January 1867 after reading the piano score: "I am completely filled with your Requiem [...] The deep seriousness combined with all the magic of poetry has a wonderful, shattering and soothing effect". Brahms, as a profound connoisseur of the Bible, chose the texts himself - based on Luther's translation, hence the title "German Requiem" - and freed himself from any liturgical reference.
Only the people and their feelings are in the foreground. Unlike Mozart or Verdi, he does not present a gloomy "Dies Irae" with a threatening apparition of the Last Judgement.
The idea behind the work is the consolation of suffering souls, combined with the expectation of resurrection. Let yourself be enchanted by this moving music and the unique ensemble!
