Song for freedom !
In Canto General, Nobel Prize winner Pablo Neruda tells of the creation of South America, its plants, animals and people, of the conquest by the conquistadors, the quest for independence and the liberation of the continent.
Mikis Theodorakis set this story to music and wrote a stirring piece with rhythmic and melodic roots in the Greek folklore of his homeland.
First performed in its entirety in 1981 in East Berlin, Canto General has become one of the most fascinating oratorios of the 20th century due to its connection with the revolutionary ideas of the time in Chile and Greece.
With this concert, the Gaechinger Cantorey celebrates the 100th birthday of the composer, who is still considered a "voice of the people" by many Greeks today, and thereby sets an example for cultural diversity and appreciation in a democratic society.
