A dog is scratched behind the ears, a cat gets a bowl of cream and a canary only has to sit there and chirp to get a reward. And a donkey? He works and works and that's all there is to it. Alf the donkey feels very unfairly treated and decides to run away... Wherever children come together, the sense of justice or injustice plays a major role. For siblings in particular, the question of justice, including the fair distribution of love and recognition, often remains an important issue well into adulthood. Children take Alf the donkey to their hearts because they can understand him so well.
