Franz Biberkopf spent four years in prison for the manslaughter of his girlfriend Ida in the heat of the moment. How does he carry on? At first, he manages to keep his head above water by earning a living. He soon becomes entangled again in criminal machinations and amorous relationships, at the end of which he loses his arm, his mind and his freedom.
