The "Biella-Schaal-Schumacher" Trio, with its rare line-up of trombone, various guitars, double bass/e-bass, has been playing together since 2023. Their program, consisting primarily of original compositions, combines a wide variety of musical elements to create a very unique sound cosmos.
Tilman Schaal's sound lines are full of wit, which do not deny their roots in free jazz and are equally permeated by the rhythmic precision of minimalist and groovy textures. They meet the impressionistic soundscapes and melodic bliss of guitarist Stefan Schumacher, which reveal the influences of classical music, and the melodious counterpoint and hypnotic grooves of bassist Oliver Biella.
Complex miniature compositions combine with expansive free improvisations, the sensitivity of lyrical moments unites with eruptive outbursts. The result is an extremely dense, interpenetrating chamber music. The colorfulness of her pieces results from the diverse playing possibilities of the trombone and its fusion with the sounds of various acoustic and electric guitars and their underlying effects. Her program is complemented by new interpretations of rarely performed modern jazz standards.
