Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643) Vespro dell Beate Vergine SV 206 (Vespers of the Virgin Mary)

A semester project like this with Monteverdi's Vespers can give the students involved deep insights into a style and its performance practice under expert direction - a benefit for life. As an audience, we also benefit from hearing and enjoying the committed music-making of young voices and virtuoso young instrumentalists. Monteverdi's Vespers rightly retains its status as a masterpiece beyond all changes in taste: the then Kapellmeister at the court in Mantua brilliantly combined Renaissance polyphony and operatic gesture, splendour of sound and moments of the greatest internalization.
