5th Master Concert
Fabio Luisi, conductor
Katia Buniatishvili, piano
Program:
Sørensen - "Evening Land" for orchestra
Rachmaninov - Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in D minor op. 30
Nielsen - Symphony No. 4 op. 29 "The Indelible"
It is no coincidence that Rachmaninov's concerto is nicknamed the "Concerto for Elephants", as it is calculated to have the most notes per second in the piano part of all the great piano concertos. The premiere in New York in 1909 was a race against time, as the score was only completed shortly beforehand. Khatia Buniatishvili can build on better conditions. But there is no question that this last great Romantic piano concerto demands an absolutely masterful soloist who can work out the fine melodic lines from the overwhelming mass of notes and fully penetrate the emotional depth of the work.
