Interview Andrea Römmele Moderation: Felix Heidenreich
In view of the major challenges facing society, we in Germany need a policy that does not manage problems but thinks ahead. Because only by imagining possible future scenarios can we prepare ourselves for eventualities and make it possible to shape democracy. With this in mind, Andrea Römmele describes the lines of conflict that have affected all areas of life in our society: Digitalization, climate change, demographic development, migration, globally networked economy and urbanization. For each of these developments, she creates scenarios that illustrate how democracy can remain alive or fail in the face of major changes. A rethink is therefore essential: away from maximizing the private and towards thinking for the collective; away from fear of the future and towards courage for the future. Andrea Römmele is Professor of Political Communication and Vice President at the Hertie School in Berlin. She was a fellow at the Thomas Mann House, Los Angeles. Her work focuses on democracy, elections and political parties. In her ARD report "Understanding Democracy" she explains politics and democracy to a broad public.
