In order to win the hand of his beloved Agathe, hunter Max has to hit the bull's eye. Afraid of failing, he gets involved with "dark forces" in the Wolfsschlucht gorge: six surefire "free bullets" for him, with the seventh the devil is allowed to snatch away any victim. Carl Maria von Weber's Freischütz , first performed in 1821, is the epitome of German romantic opera. No one before has made the intrusion of the supernatural and uncanny sound so suggestive.
