Der Gang vor die Hunde

Location:
Theaterhaus, Siemensstr. 11, 70469 Stuttgart

Kästner's autobiographical urban novel was first published in 1931 in a censored version under the title Fabian. The Story of a Moralist. It was not until 2013 that the masterpiece was published in an unabridged version as Der Gang vor die Hunde, as Erich Kästner originally called it. It is a tale of longing and suicide, bought and sold love, the immoral Berlin of the 1930s and the tender juggernaut of modernity. This extremely entertaining evening takes you into a crazy world that often seems frighteningly topical.

The focus is on the "moralist" Jakob Fabian, a German studies graduate and advertising expert, who drifts through the debauched nightlife of late Weimar Republic Berlin. The rise of fascism also makes itself felt, something that Kästner had a clear opinion on but did not really take seriously.

The acting duo Christine Sommer and Martin Brambach have staged this sometimes hilarious social satire with fellow artists. Enriched by popular music from Kästner's time, the extremely entertaining evening takes you into a crazy world that often seems frighteningly topical.
