The hedgehog's herb garden needs a lot of care. He gets up at sunrise and tends to the fruit and vegetables, weeds and looks after the young plants. But his pride and joy is the lettuce. Only with him does the lettuce taste so fine and the lettuce leaves are so tender and crunchy.

But one day, when the hedgehog goes into the garden to pick some herbs for the soup, she catches a cheeky hare. The hare is sitting in the middle of the garden, eating the lettuce and carrots, jumping around and trampling the vegetable patches. "Get out now!" shouts Mrs. Hedgehog, but the hare doesn't even think about it, he scolds Mrs. Hedgehog, insults the hedgehog too and is sure that he has the right to have everything free just because he is stronger and faster.

The hedgehog cannot tolerate this. A bet is made. The winner can eat everything from the garden for a whole year and doesn't have to do anything. But not so the loser. He has to work in the garden from dawn to dusk and do all the work alone. The hare is happy. When it comes to races, he's sure to win. But the hedgehog needs some good advice, because with his short legs and round belly, he's going to lose the race. Or will he? Didn't the tortoise once tell the story of how he won the race with the kangaroo...

Even in this difficult situation there is a chance, after all it's all about the garden: to be or not to be!
