The events take place in New York, in the apartment of Barney Cashman's mother. Barney is the owner of a fish restaurant, just over 40 years old and has lived with his wife for more than 20 years. One day he begins to think about death and how he has led a gray, boring life.
He has never been unfaithful to his wife, never started a fight, never got involved in any adventures - no exciting experiences, no fond memories...
