Der Reisende

You can look forward to a literary gem that was only discovered in this country a few years ago, now dramatized at the Theater tri-bühne. Ulrich A. Boschwitz wrote an astonishing book at the age of just 23 in the wake of the Reichspogromnacht. His novel "The Traveler", written in 1938 and only published in German in 2017, shows with almost Kafkaesque humour how quickly and without resistance a familiar environment can become a hostile one:

Jewish merchant Otto Silbermann wanders through a Germany radically changed by National Socialism and anti-Semitism at the end of the 1930s, in the wake of the Reich pogroms. He spends his days in trains, on platforms, in station restaurants and meets refugees and Nazis, both good and bad people....

The production by László Bagossy with Manuel Krstanovic in the title role promises an evening full of literary and theatrical discoveries.
