"Stammheim" has become a myth since the trial of the first generation of RAF leaders. The defense lawyers of choice for the accused did everything they could to turn the criminal proceedings into a show trial. As a result, almost only the one-sided interpretation of the RAF lawyers penetrated the German public - and continues to have an effect to this day. It makes the trial appear as a "systematic destruction of all constitutional guarantees" (Otto Schily). Yet the opposite is true: the judges guaranteed due process of law.

Half a century later, it is time to do justice to the proceedings and thus to the rule of law - on the basis of a wide variety of sources. The story spans from the arrival of the RAF leadership in custody in 1972 to the suicide of Andreas Baader, Gudrun Ensslin and Jan-Carl Raspe on October 18, 1977, showing what really happened at the trial of the century. It is a model for how the constitutional state should deal with terror.

Sven Felix Kellerhoff, born in Stuttgart in 1971, studied contemporary history, ancient history and media law. For more than 20 years, he has been managing editor for contemporary and cultural history at Die Welt. He is the author of numerous non-fiction books on contemporary history, including Hitler's "Mein Kampf" and the NSDAP.
