Diary Of Dreams - Live 2025
Diary of Dreams, a life of music.
Named after a small composition on the classical guitar called Diary of Dreams, Adrian Hates, who grew up in Düsseldorf, founded Diary of Dreams in 1989. Having grown up with purely classical music, he devoured the first electronic sounds he heard on the radio. The 80s, in combination with his classical roots, therefore proved to be formative for his musical career. His desire was to merge these two worlds of sound in his very own way.
Since the age of nine, he has been influenced by the classical guitar; later, with his first electric guitar, new possibilities opened up for him. Music became a substitute world. At the age of 15, he ventured onto the piano for the first time and took lessons. Soon afterwards, the acoustic spectrum expanded again, and drum computers, keyboards and the first Atari were added. Working independently was born out of necessity, as the search for suitable fellow musicians who shared his vision proved to be almost impossible. In the end, it was precisely this combination that made Diary of Dreams special and unique even in its early days.
In 1994, after countless demo recordings that never satisfied Adrian, the debut album Cholymelan finally followed. Acclaimed by the press, it immediately catapulted itself into the hearts of many music lovers of dark sounds.
A new dream of the workaholic was to release the second album on his own label. His skepticism towards the music industry was simply too great to relinquish so much control. The need to be able to decide every little step himself seemed to him at the time to be the only possible way of working.
And so he released the second album End of Flowers just two years later on his own label Accession Records, where every other album has been released to date. At similar intervals, 26 further sound carriers followed, including a DVD, a few singles, 2 EPs, a celebrated acoustic album and 12 regular albums, including, for example, the milestone Nigredo with the legendary photo shoot in Iceland and the extremely successful current album hell in Eden.
Particularly appreciated by his fans for his lyrics, Hates mainly uses metaphorical language and describes what is on his mind in a very expressive and ambiguous way, mostly in English, but also in German. Which language he chooses is actually decided by the song itself, he says.
In all these years, in which the line-up changed again and again, mastermind and singer Adrian Hates came closer and closer to the vision of his project and ultimately also to his dreams.
It has now been around 500 concerts in almost 40 countries since the first note from the diary was heard, and there is no end in sight. According to Adrian, it will be the last thing he does in his life.
A life with and for music.
