Reading of the story by Josef Mühlberger (1903-1985), with Isabel Schmier. On the saxophone: Dorina Schmauder

Waschek and Jenjik share a special friendship, which is sometimes more than just mutual attraction. Growing up in a Moravian village, the farmer's sons spend almost every day together, go rowing in the village pond, go on excursions and get to know girls. Their relationship is put to the test and ultimately ends abruptly.

The story, first published in 1934, is the best-known work by the writer, translator and journalist Josef Mühlberger (1903-1985), born to a German father and a Czech mother in the Bohemian town of Trautenau/Trutnov. For Hermann Hesse, it was "the most beautiful and simplest young poetry I have read in a long time"; National Socialist critics rejected it.
