When the first issue of KATAPULT was published in spring 2016, it was a real innovation: the magazine consisted (and still consists) primarily of infographics and charts on political and social topics. Complex contexts and phenomena are reduced to a core that can be grasped at a glance and that often enough can only amaze. For some critics, this was a step too far in the direction of simplification, while others were enthusiastic. This area of tension has never frightened Benjamin Fredrich, the founder of KATAPULT. Nor does he set out to fulfill general expectations: He refuses to follow the "we're going to Berlin" trend and keeps the editorial office in Greifswald. He takes a clear political stance against the right, even if this gets him into trouble. In this interview, we discuss the diverse activities of Benjamin Fredrich and KATAPULT as well as the place that the publishing house and the magazine occupy in the German media landscape. The discussion partner is Tilman Rau, who has been teaching reportage and journalistic and narrative writing at the Literaturhaus for many years.
