Double cheese platter. 100 years of collection. 20 years of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart

To mark the double anniversary of 100 years of the collection and 20 years of the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart is showing a special exhibition that exclusively presents works from its own collection. The focus is on numerous recent acquisitions and donations.

Dieter Roth's monumental food painting "Double Cheese Platter" gives the exhibition its name and serves as its central work. This unique work of art, which consists of different types of cheese, is constantly changing due to natural decomposition and mold processes. It developed its own dynamic and expanded the discussion about the production and transience of art as well as its reception by the viewer.

The exhibition takes up this idea and asks: How has the municipal collection developed over the last hundred years? What maturing processes characterize the collecting and preservation of works of art? And how does their significance change over time?

Seven themed rooms, curated by the museum's experts, open up different perspectives on the collection. Historical references enter into a dialog with current questions about consumption, identity and social diversity. Exciting juxtapositions are created through the interplay of works that have not been shown in public for a long time, or have never been shown before, with more recent donations and acquisitions. The exhibition thus combines tradition and the present and invites visitors to view the collection from a fresh perspective.
