Nine-Night is a funeral tradition that originated in West Africa and is practiced in Caribbean countries. It is a 9-day wake. During this time, friends and relatives gather at the home of the deceased. They exchange their condolences and memories while singing, eating and drinking together. Today, these gatherings are more like a party than a wake. According to tradition, on the ninth night, the spirit ("duppy" in Jamaican patois) of the deceased walks through the party, gathers food and says goodbye before
moving on to its resting place.

DUPPY SHOW continues Herkner's exploration of the themes of death, mourning and remembrance. For the Palermo Gallery, he has staged objects created especially for this location and temporary crypt structures as well as a new sound/video work to create an expansive overall installation.
