Athens. Hermia loves Lysander, Demetrius loves Hermia. Because her father wants to marry her off to Demetrius, Hermia and Lysander flee to the neighboring forest. Demetrius pursues them. Helena, who is in love with Demetrius, follows the three of them. But the confusion is not over yet: in the forest, a troupe of craftsmen is rehearsing a play about a tragic love story and the fairy king Oberon and his wife Titania are having a heated argument. With the help of a magical flower, Oberon wants to decide the dispute for himself, but his assistant Puck only causes further entanglements ...
