What does it mean to be a "foreigner" in a country where you were born?

In the context of media-criticized identity politics and increasing legal pressure, Stuart Hall's discourse on identity offers a profound perspective on how we can understand our ever-changing selves in an ever-changing world. His work serves as a guide for those struggling to navigate the complex and often turbulent landscape of identity. What does it mean to be a "foreigner" in a country where you were born?

"Call me STR-Anger" is Rebecca Pokua Korang's first solo exhibition. The title refers to a rupture within the German narratives of past and present, which often cast a selective perspective on their actors and scenarios.
The wordplay "STR-Anger" combines various cultural and theoretical concepts to reflect on subjectivity, identity and resistance. Inspired by Stuart Hall's "Familiar Stranger" and expanded by the idea of John Akomfrah's hyphen, it symbolizes the tension between belonging and alienation. The hyphen stands for both connections and separations and reflects hybrid identities and the constant movement between different worlds. Similar to the hyphen, it symbolizes the ruptures and continuities within the histories of the African diaspora and beyond. The exhibition space thus becomes a field of tension between memory and narrative, anger and celebration.

Based on her own Afro-German biography, Korang's works reflect the complexity of the diasporic experience and illuminate the interactions between space, power and memory in the context of neo-colonial structures. She draws parallels between historical events and current social and political realities and questions how resistance must be constantly reformulated. History is not understood as a linear temporality, but as a construct, interspersed with continuities and ruptures that run like a common thread through her work. In a sound play of personal and collective memories, symbolic representations and audiovisual media, Korang creates a space for reflection on identity, power and one's own positioning.
