Imagine a modern battlefield, ravaged by military vehicles, littered with shrapnel and abandoned by the last survivors. Above it, a lone flag flutters in the sky - an ambivalent sign of peace and destruction. Although it is unknown how and when it was created, a flag is the most widespread signal of mankind. It can be a promise of goodwill or an omen of doom. Now imagine all the flags that have been flown over thousands of years... Some are now in pieces, others have yet to be woven. Their colors mingle and form an inexhaustible palette, enriched with blood, sweat and tears. Not far removed from today's military warfare, the group exhibition "FLAG" at Galerie Elisabeth & Reinhard Hauff takes up the flag as its central motif. The exhibited flags differ in their patterns and depictions and tell stories of consuming powers, suggestive politics and ironic encounters.
... a group of exceptionally strong works by world-class artists. And as Julio Rondo's beautiful composition 2024 shows: "FLAG is "only" a Four Letter Word"!
Text: Paulius Andriuškevicius and Elisabeth Hauff (translation into German: Cornelia Schuster).
Without the generous and friendly cooperation of all participating artists and the galleries representing them, this group exhibition would not have been possible. We would like to thank Andersen's Contemporary, Copenhagen, Galerie Kraupa-Tuskany Zeidler, Berlin, Galerie Mehdi Chouakri, Berlin and Galerie Nathalie Obadia, Paris/Brussels.
We cordially invite you to the opening on Friday, November 22, 2024, from 6 to 9 pm.
