Climate change and urbanization are two important megatrends that are changing our way of life and environmental conditions. Climate change will lead to more frequent and more intense heat waves and heavy rainfall events. The Ahr valley flood disaster and the heat in cities such as Stuttgart in summer require strategic adaptation. In addition to early warning systems, approaches must be developed to strengthen resilience. In addition to physical changes, the vulnerabilities and dynamics of exposure must also be taken into account. Prof. Jörn Birkmann, Institute for Spatial Planning and Development Planning at the University of Stuttgart, played a key role in the reconstruction of the Ahr Valley and was lead author for the last two reports of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
