A lecture with Judith Welsch-Körntgen from the Impuls vhs & Bibliothek series in the Vaihingen district library.

From "child prodigies" and "women painters" to women artists with equal rights?

Anyone looking for women in a major art museum today will find many paintings of naked women, but only a few works by female artists. Museums advertise with large special exhibitions ("Rachel Ruysch", "Katharina Grosse"), but art by women is still rare in the collection rooms.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, women were denied access to (free) state art academies. Prospective female painters or sculptors could only attend private painting or public arts and crafts schools to become teachers or craftswomen.

The lecture shows the long path of women to recognition in art history using examples from the 16th to the 19th century such as Sofonisba Anguissola and Angelika Kaufmann, the turning point with open-air painting in France and the mockingly called "Malweiber" (women painters) of the turn of the century such as Gabriele Münter or Paula Modersohn-Becker. The concluding look at the work of contemporary
women artists also raises the question of how they see their situation today.
