Hans van Manen has built up an impressive oeuvre in over 60 years of work: full of poetry, humor and musicality. Without a plot, van Manen tells moving stories about relationships, making us feel more than there are words. The ballet evening FÜNF FÜR HANS is an exemplary representation of van Manen's oeuvre and shows the musical spectrum covered by the Dutch master, but also the different characters his ballets can have. Adagio Hammerklavier is permeated with tenderness, in Two Pieces for Het a dancer and a dancer initially challenge each other brashly before they gently come together. Trois Gnossiennes also begins with an underlying tension, but the mood gradually changes to one of harmony. In the fast-paced solo, three dancers pass their solo part on to the next as if in a relay race. Frank Bridge Variations, on the other hand, is characterized by simmering tension. The dancers are in constant dialog - whether playful, reproachful or conciliatory.
