April 22, 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the death of the artist Käthe Kollwitz (1867-1945). Born in Königsberg and living in Berlin for a long time, the graphic artist, painter and sculptor was the first woman to become a full member of the Prussian Academy of Arts.
Under National Socialism, her art was singled out as degenerate. She was a staunch pacifist (her son died in the First World War at the age of 18) and took a stand against war, social injustice and political injustice with her works. She used her art to denounce hardship and oppression and was regarded as a voice for women and children.
The Haus der Heimat is showing works by 40 pupils from the Johannes-Gutenberg-Schule Stuttgart's vocational college for graphic design in the town hall with reference to Käthe Kollwitz' artistic and socially critical attitude. Current topics are dealt with: What does democracy mean, what basic rights are derived from a democracy and what dangers are democracies exposed to?
