Conversation

Erich Kästner
Ulrike Draesner and John von Düffel
Moderation: Anne-Dore Krohn
Prologue and epilogue: Timo Brunke

Erich Kästner's stories are undoubtedly classics of children's literature - they still inspire readers of all ages today. However, Kästner was not only a successful children's author, but also a poet, novelist and journalist. The National Socialists banned his books; he was arrested twice by the Gestapo. Kästner knew how to use ironic language to ward off the
emerging fascism with ironic language. The discussion with writer Ulrike Draesner and dramaturge and author John von Düffel will focus on his first children's books: "Emil
and the Detectives" from 1929 and "Pünktchen und Anton" from 1931. We will relive how the clever Emil and his new friends chase a thief through Berlin to ensure justice.
Anton Gast and Luise Pogge, known as Pünktchen, also live in Berlin. Although their social backgrounds could not be more different, a close friendship develops between the two.
friendship develops between them. Here, Kästner addresses moral questions about courage, friendship and pflichtbewusstsein. These "reflections", as he called them, are messages for young readers - sometimes more and sometimes less contemporary from today's perspective.
