Klassiker der Literaturgeschichte - Georg Büchner: “Leonce und Lena” und “Lenz”

Location:
Literaturhaus Stuttgart, Breitscheidstr. 4, 70174 Stuttgart

Moderation: Anne-Dore Krohn
Prologue and epilogue: Timo Brunke

Despite his short life, Georg Büchner (1813-1837) had a lasting influence on German literature.
His only story "Lenz" tells of the deteriorating mental state of the writer Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751-1792) in vivid images of nature and life. During a stay with Pastor Oberlin in the mountain village of Waldbach, Lenz's anxiety, depressive episodes and feelings of alienation worsen. In unforgettable images, the
medical student Büchner, who draws on letters from Lenz and observations by the priest Oberlin for his text, tells of a world turned upside down.
In the comedy "Leonce and Lena", Büchner's criticism of the absolutism of his time and his demand for a greater political voice can be felt. With strong satirical overtones, the play tells the story of the two royal children Leonce and Lena, who flow from their small kingdoms before an arranged marriage and fall in love without knowing who the other is. Writer Ulrike Draesner and dramaturge and author John von Düffel will talk about the author, his work and impact. The stage poet Timo Brunke will present two
texts written especially for this evening as a prologue and epilogue.
