"Kunst-Kinder-Küche" is a juried exhibition of the VBKW Ludwigsburg. Does the cliché "art and family are incompatible" still exist or has it been overcome and if so - how/by what means? The artists explore these questions.
The art world is becoming more female. But what does this mean for art itself? The VBKW Region Ludwigsburg sheds light on the complex connections between gender, art and society in the exhibition "Kunst-Kinder-Küche".
The historical framework, in which the role of women was primarily limited to the family and household, has undoubtedly hindered the artistic production of women. The women's movement has brought about a paradigm shift here.
The UBS Art Market Report 2020 examines the gender balance in art galleries in the years 2015 to 2019. 74 percent of the "sales stars" are artists and only 26 percent are women artists. However, at 43 percent, young female artists are clearly approaching the 57 percent of young male artists.
The VBKW Region Ludwigsburg raises the question of the extent to which the artistic evaluation of works is actually independent of gender-specific attributions. Or is it rather an adaptation to social discourses on gender equality?
The absence of female artists with a migration background highlights the structural barriers that women of non-German origin continue to experience in the art world. In addition, the figures from the UBS Art Market Report indicate that the majority of successful female artists come from financially privileged backgrounds.
So what has changed in the understanding of the roles of both artists and recipients? The following artists explore this question:
Elke Bach
Karen Bayer
Anne Esslinger
Susanne Feix
Peter Otto Hilsenbeck
Sylke Alma Klopsch
Kersten Paulsen
Birgit Rehfeldt
Günther Sommer
