The author and publicist Helmut Ortner reads from his book 'Heimatkunde - Falsche Wahrheiten. Real lies. It is about a repressed German past and a contaminated present, about religious arrogance and secular defense, about populist politics and contempt for democracy, about autonomy and conformism. This collection of political essays, commentaries and reports calls for the defense of an open society and pleads for productive debate.
Helmut Ortner has published more than twenty books, mainly political non-fiction and biographies. His books published by Nomen include "Dumme Wut, kluger Zorn" (2018), "EXIT" - Warum wir weniger Religion brauchen" (2019), "Ohne Gnade - eine Geschichte der Todesstrafe" (2020), "Widerstreit - Über Macht, Wahn und Widerstand" (2021) and "Der Hinrichter: Roland Freisler - Mörder im Dienste Hitlers", as well as "Volk im Wahn - Die Wege der Nazis" (Edition Faust, 2022). His books have been translated into 14 languages. Helmut Ortner lives and works in Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt. He is a member of Amnesty International and on the advisory board of the Giordano Bruno Foundation.
