John Tavener describes his concerto for cello and string orchestra "The protecting veil" as a "sounding icon". Music of great radiance that cleverly balances the space between sound and silence and exerts a fascinating pull on the listener. Perhaps because it touches on the longing for devotion and fulfillment in an unobtrusive way. In this deeply spiritual work, Tavener brings to life the life and work of Mary, her cosmic beauty and the stages from her birth to her ascension.
from her birth to her ascension.
For the young cellist Lionel Martin, "The protecting veil" is a work close to his heart. As an 18-year-old, he recorded it on CD with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra at SWR. He has formed a new orchestra especially for this concert - with young, highly talented musicians who are just as passionate about this music as he is.
