The idea of this program with the Stuttgarter Kantorei is to set choral works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy (1809-47) from several of his creative periods in relation to song movements and motets written by other composers in Germany around the same time. Glory to God by Nicolai (1810-49) sounds astonishingly close to Mendelssohn's style. We may hear operatic melodies in Meyerbeer (1791-1864), but the sensitive expression characterizes his Pater noster just as much as the songs by Loewe (1796-1869) or Cornelius (1824-74). Kay Johannsen has arranged a subtle, gently swaying prayer for voice and piano by Felix's sister Fanny (1805-47) for choir.
