NACHTSCHWÄRMERKONZERT: Back to my mazedonian roots

The Nachtschwärmerkonzerte concerts combine the BIX Jazzclub with the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra. The focus here is on composed and improvised music, music for classical symphony orchestra or jazz trio, for string quartet and jazz quartet.

The Gustav-Siegle-Haus opens its doors from 18:00. The BIX gastronomy offers drinks and snacks, a jazz band welcomes guests from 19:30 in the foyer of the Siegle-Haus, before the Stuttgart Philharmonic Orchestra continues in the main hall at 20:30. Later, the late night continues in a relaxed jazz club atmosphere with live music in the BIX.

LATE NIGHT AT BIX: Martin Gjakonovski Quartet

Dragan Gjakonovski-Shpato (1931-1987) is considered a jazz icon in North Macedonia. He founded and led the big band of the radio station RTV-Skopje, wrote over 100 compositions and several thousand arrangements for various jazz and popular music ensembles à la Paul Kuhn, Jerry Van Rooyen or Kurt Edelhagen.

His works form a symbiosis between jazz mainstream and Macedonian folklore. They are an important part of Macedonian cultural heritage and have since been reinterpreted by numerous artists or even used as themes for feature films.

His son Martin Gjakonovski, one of the leading double bass players in Germany, organized a highly acclaimed concert in 2017 in collaboration with the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra in honour of his father and has been intensively involved with his music ever since.

He has two albums in the works for 2024. One is music by Dragan Gjakonovski-Shpato, played by five Macedonian musicians, and the other is an album with compositions by Martin himself. On the occasion of the Nachtschwärmer concert, Gjakonovski will present a selection of this special music.
