_______ Johann Strauss Sohn and the "golden age" of Viennese operetta
If one composer can lay claim to being the most popular of all, it is Johann Strauss Sohn. For a time, the whole world succumbed to the irresistible magic of the Strauss waltz; his popularity remains unbroken to this day - Strauss melodies can be heard all over the world.
The music of Johann Strauss represents something like the esprit of Vienna. It expresses sensual charm and the light, yet stylish way of life that is characteristic of the Viennese.
Johann Strauss is regarded as the most important representative of the Strauss musical dynasty and the perfecter of the "golden" Viennese operetta.
_______ Franz Lehár and the "silver age" of Viennese operetta
This brilliant operetta era was followed by lean years that showed a decline in the genre and gave rise to fears of its complete decline. After the turn of the century, however, new strong talents emerged again, whose performances dispelled the doubts and gave operetta new impetus.
The most creative and compelling personality among the composers of the so-called "silver age" of Viennese operetta was Franz Lehár. The richness and originality of his melodic invention, the sensual fullness of temperament and dramatic verve, rhythmic piquancy, lyrical mellifluousness and the manifold charms of tonal and folkloristic coloration are the distinguishing characteristics of his best stage works, created with remarkable skill, which have rightly found worldwide acclaim.
_______ Jacques Offenbach: "Father of the operetta"
Jacques Offenbach, known as the "father of operetta", possessed a special talent for burlesque, comedy and parody that no musician before or after him had. His musical wit spared nothing; however, he also had fine, gracefully lyrical sounds at his disposal.
The success of his works inspired both Franz von Suppé and Johann Strauss, Son to enrich the new genre of operetta with their own compositions.
