Strict rules apply in Pankoland: The society is geared towards self-sufficiency, everyone has to grow vegetables. Mr. Panko and Mrs. Brenzi lay down the rules for living together and control the life of the community. But at night, "subterraneans" appear. They plunder the beds and kidnap young people. Clemens lives with his brother Fredo and his aunt in Pankoland. He can hardly remember his parents, they disappeared when he was very young and anyone who is no longer there is quickly forgotten in Pankoland. When Clemens is asked to smuggle a secret package across, he opens it against all instructions, is kidnapped and finds himself outside the known borders. But is everything better here?
