"Saliha" is the story of a woman from Turkey who came to Germany as a worker in the early 1960s.
14 million migrant workers from Italy, Spain, Greece and Turkey came to the Federal Republic of Germany between 1955 and 1973 as part of various recruitment agreements. Cheap labor, without which the "economic miracle" would never have taken place, continues to contribute to the wealth of our society to this day. Around 800,000 people from the various regions of Turkey belong to the first generation. The fact that on average one in four of these workers was a woman has hardly been noticed by the public until now.
Saliha Kartag came to Stuttgart from Sivas in the winter of 1962 and worked for the Bundesbahn. Her story is exemplary of the fate of many women at that time. They had the strength and courage to set off alone and travel to a completely unknown, foreign world in the hope of feeding the families and children they had left behind and giving them a better future.
