Guided tour on International Women's Day with Dr. Barbara Six (Stadtarchiv Stuttgart)
In 1883, the Royal Art School in Stuttgart was one of the first academies in the German-speaking world to admit women to study painting. However, their training only partially corresponded to that of their male colleagues. For example, they were excluded from the nude classes in which naked bodies were studied. In art criticism and philosophy, there was also a prevailing view that women should preferably paint portraits or still lifes and thus devote themselves to supposedly "simpler" art genres. But did the women artists adhere to these guidelines? What works did they leave us, and did at least one generation paint before them? In turn, the question arises as to how women from Stuttgart were portrayed - for a long time predominantly by men. Using selected examples, a guided tour of the painting collection of the Stuttgart City Archive will focus on art by and about women.
