Scherben und Schichten - Spaziergang und Gespräch auf Stuttgarts Monte Scherbelino

On three dates in July 2024, the Stuttgart Cultural Office's Coordination Office for the Culture of Remembrance invites you to take a walk and talk on the Birkenkopf.

Stuttgart's "Monte Scherbelino" was created when over 1.5 million cubic meters of rubble were piled up on the Birkenkopf in the southwest of the city after the Second World War. Today, the mountain of rubble is not only an important monument and memorial, but also one of Stuttgart's most popular vantage points.

Retired architect and urban planner Giuliana Fronte will provide insights into the design, history and significance of the site. Afterwards, we would like to get into conversation with you: How should the Birkenkopf be commemorated in the future? What signs, information and formats do we need for this and how can we ensure that as many people as possible feel addressed?

Note on accessibility: at the event, we will walk together from the summit downhill or from the parking lot to the summit. The path is approx. 1 km long with a slight incline. The guided walk is in German.

Giuliana Fronte studied architecture and urban planning at the University of Stuttgart and, in addition to working in a planning office, is also an academic assistant at the Institute for Fundamentals of Modern Architecture and Design (IGmA). In her research and practice, she focuses on the political and cultural dimension of architecture and the city. She has been working on the historical and contemporary significance of the Birkenkopf for several years.
