"I moved in as a stranger". Yes. But who is "I"? A lonely wanderer almost 200 years ago, pursuing a romantic love? Or is it us today within a society that has become alien to us? In his interpretation of Hans Zender 's Schubert's "Winterreise", Dutch film artist Aernout Mik projects the loneliness of the self into today's mass society in moments of crisis of social order. Zender also describes a similar process in his "composed interpretation" in 1993, when he directly inscribes the changes in our listening habits into Schubert's original and overwrites the songs with an orchestration for orchestra. Just as Zender dissolves the romantic "I" of the wanderer through postmodern eyes, Mik fragments the individual with his camera, with multiple perspectives on a reality that comes close to us in an unsettling way.
