In spring 2025, the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart will present the renowned VERBUND COLLECTION, Vienna. With its works of the feminist avant-garde, Austria's largest energy company VERBUND occupies a prominent position in photography of the 1970s. For decades, founding director Gabriele Schor has established the concept of the feminist avant-garde in art historical discourse.

In THE GÄLLERY - Raum für Fotografie, the exhibition provides multi-layered insights into the photographs of feminist avant-garde artists who radically questioned the role of women in art and society and thus sought to establish an alternative image of women from a female perspective.

The exhibition features 208 works by prominent female photographers of the 1970s - such as VALIE EXPORT and Cindy Sherman. Other female artists on display include Martha Rosler, Judy Chicago, Judith Bernstein, Birgit Jürgenssen, Karin Mack, Ulrike Rosenbach, Renate Bertlmann and Penny Slinger. What they all have in common is that they raise their, from a historical perspective, still young emancipated voice against art and society.

These artistic positions illustrate the change that took place in the 1970s, not only in art, but also in the awareness of women and their role in society.
