Five maids tell the story of Lizzy, Darcy, Jane & Co. in Isobel McArthur's theatrical adaptation. Love, money, self-determination: Jane Austen's cult novel may be 200 years old, but its themes are not. Mrs. Bennet has five daughters. The problem: they are unmarried. Thanks to the rules of inheritance devised by wise men, the only way to secure the family's existence is to "get yourself a proper bachelor". Jane Austen's famous novel as a madcap pop comedy with music, narrated with a wink by five women in eighteen roles.

"There's a bit of a problem here with emotional repression. So don't be surprised if someone starts singing out of the blue from time to time," is the gentle introduction to the special circumstances of cramped life in the small town. But sudden karaoke interludes are not the only thing that makes Isobel McArthur's acclaimed new version of Jane Austen's masterpiece unusual and unique. Highly modern and surprisingly true to the original, McArthur gives a voice to those who - although indispensable - usually go unmentioned. In a veritable tour de force, five maids embody not only the sarcastic Elizabeth Bennet and the snooty Mr. Darcy, but almost the entire staff of the novel. Amidst slapstick, pop songs and a very old-fashioned love story, a tale of female self-determination and economic dependence emerges that doesn't seem so far away.
