But sudden karaoke interludes are not the only thing that makes Isobel McArthur's acclaimed new version of Jane Austen's masterpiece unusual and unique. Highly modern and surprisingly true to the original, McArthur gives a voice to those who - although indispensable - usually go unmentioned. In a veritable tour de force, five maids embody not only the sarcastic Elizabeth Bennet and the snooty Mr. Darcy, but almost the entire staff of the novel. Amidst slapstick, pop songs and a very old-fashioned love story, a tale of female self-determination and economic dependence emerges that doesn't seem so far away.
