From January 27 - July 28, 2024, the exhibition at the Linden Museum will focus on the multi-layered connections between Stuttgart, Germany and Afghanistan.

It presents historical objects, pre-Islamic and Islamic art as well as everyday but meaningful objects. Created together with the Entangled: Stuttgart - Afghanistan working group, the exhibition brings together people from the region with international history. The participants have contributed conceptually, in terms of content and personally with memories and thoughts, creating references to the present.

The exhibition begins with transcontinental relations with Afghanistan, showing depictions of the Buddha and marble panels from the Ghaznavid era interactively via augmented reality. One focus is on the Stuttgart Badakhshan Expedition 1962/63 of the Linden Museum, retold through research and participation between Stuttgart and Afghanistan. The exhibition also tells of trips to Afghanistan and German families in Kabul in the 1970s. Objects with multiple meanings in the 20th and 21st centuries are also featured, including textiles, jewelry, furniture and tableware with links to migration, war and flight.

Selected works by Afghan artist Abdul Ghafur Brechna accompany the themes. Two special rooms, the "library" and the "tea room", invite visitors to linger and participate. An extensive program deepens the connections between Stuttgart and Afghanistan. The exhibition presents objects from the collection of the Linden Museum as well as exhibits from German and European museums with archaeological collaborations.

In its complexity, the exhibition opens up new perspectives on the closely interwoven relationships between Stuttgart, Germany and Afghanistan.
