4th Master Concert
Christoph Eschenbach, conductor
Sheku Kanneh-Mason, cello
Program:
Elgar - Concerto for Cello and Orchestra in E minor op. 85
Brahms - Symphony No. 4 in E minor op. 98
At the last royal wedding in the United Kingdom, the young cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason moved an audience of millions to tears with his charismatic playing. And with Elgar's Cello Concerto, he will touch his listeners once again: this late romantic masterpiece crystallizes all the deep melancholy that surrounded the composer during the war years around 1917. It is Elgar's last great work and radiates an incredible depth.
Brahms also concluded his orchestral work with his 4th Symphony and, although he did not speak the last word as a composer, every phrase, every one of the four completely individual movements speaks of the greatest maturity and highest mastery.
