Major national exhibition
The first millennium is a time of great upheaval: the Roman Empire and its fall determine life in Europe, followed by new empires, new rulers and, with Christianity, a new religion. We know names and terms such as Romans, Franks, Alamanni, Swabians or emperor, duchy and church for the country we now call Baden-Württemberg. But what do they mean for life over a thousand years ago? Who were the people who preceded us? What characterized their coexistence on a large and small scale?
Archaeology is looking for answers to these questions. It examines the traces in the ground on which we stand: in past cemeteries and settlements, in the first places of worship beneath our churches and the ancient roads that cut through our landscape... - they allow us to discover how close or alien the people of the first millennium are to us.
The Great State Exhibition is being created in cooperation with the Baden-Württemberg State Office for the Preservation of Monuments.
