THE REAL MCKENZIES | Canadians in kilts play Scottish-Gaelic folk-punk including bagpipes
According to legend, frontman Paul McKenzie had a divine vision in the 90s - after listening to a SEX PISTOLS record and an ANDY STEWART record at the same time! (The latter is a Scottish singer of folk hits with titles like "A Scottish Soldier" and "Donald Where's Your Troosers?"). The Canadian then returned to his Scottish roots and founded this now well-known band, equipped his fellow musicians with kilts and began playing Gaelic folk-punk with them, including bagpipes of course. Records are released regularly on Fat Wreck Chords and the songs are bursting with great melodies and ideas on how to combine bagpipes and electric guitar with the spirit of '77 punk rock. So this is just the right fare for fans of THE POGUES, DROPKICK MURPHYS and FLOGGING MOLLY... although the latter two bands only came into being years after the Canadians were founded and the question arises as to whether they didn't even copy their style from them.
